Do I dare???

I so want to try this: http://www.magknits.com/Feb07/patterns/falling.htm

It's a toe-up sock (never done that before), that has a provisional CO (never done that before) and is knit flat to a certain point, joined and then worked in the round. I love the pattern and recently fell in love with cables, but I have a lot of trepidation about taking on this sock. Still, it's a challenge that's intriguing!

I would send you the sock yarn to see you succeed... (alliteration at it's finest!) No--seriously--I bet you can do it--but it may age you if you try it too soon...but...it's freakin' gorgeous... and I'd really send you the sockyarn. Seriously!

Oh you are lovely. Luvely luvely luvely! I'll have to tackle it and whine about my struggles with you all for your help and insights. Maybe by then I'll have my !@#$%@ camera back. ;)

Those socks are cute. The instructions are clearly written. You should be able to do it. The only thing I would change, instead of picking up the stitches from the provisional cast on, I'd use this provisional cast on. It saves time and makes your life easier.

give it a try! The provisional cast on and the short rows aren't as hard as they sound or look. Give it a try first on larger yarn though so you can see what you're doing better.

Knittech, that link is great. The pics are clear -- thanks for sending.

I still don't get the benefit of a provisional CO. I see that you can start knitting from the CO edge, but I don't see what it buys you. I need to get those knitting basics books Julie keeps talking about.

Trish, I think you're right about trying it. I'll probably knit a few swatches with it first to try it out before moving on to the real thing.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Provisional cast on is a life saver for when you want to knit from the "other" direction. So when working on toes using a PC*, you're only working one side with the wraps. Then you go and work the other side and by the time you're down, you've knitted a curve and you're back up to the PC. Take the stitches and put them on a needle and you're back to knitting in the round.

* yes, I'm lazy...
